After blogging last night I had a bit of social time with a couple in the restaurant but I was in tent and asleep by 10. The guy in the only other tent in the communal bicycle field was restless and kept getting up and making enough noise to wake me as well. But I guess I slept well enough and woke to another sunny day.
I enjoyed a few minutes in the sun by the water before packing up and heading off about 9. Nothing was open on my way through Brockville so I continued to Prescott and found a popular and good breakfast spot.
After a hearty breakfast I continued on the waterfront trail along roads for the most part. The riding was good and traffic light. Great weather and no wind.
This area featured prominately in the war of 1812 and the coast is dotted with forts and canons pointed across the river.
A monster grain elevator at the Johnstown port. It looks kind of unused but I was unable to find out for sure.
Another bridge to the USA.
Typical view from the trail for most of the day.
More canons at the monument for the battle at Chrysler's farm. One of the pivotal ones that helped make the point that invading canada was not worth the effort.
More shoreline views.
About 30 klm before Cornwall the trail again became a separate paved riding trail all the way to town. I was impressed with this view of Corwall rather than what I had only seen from the 401. Then "the obsacle" appeared.
The bridge to the USA is being demolished and it cuts the downtown, and the bike trail, in half. Maybe the Americans got fed up with all those canons pointing at them and decided they did not want a bridge anymore?
The final 30 klm out of Corwall was back to roads but still very nice. I met my first fellow bike travelers; a couple from Montreal who are doing a Kingston to Montréal trip. I finally reached my campground only to be told that the restaurant I had been counting on was closed. So l left them and went to the much nicer Glen Gary Provincial Park next store. No food there either but I have a great spot.
Just as I was about to ride the 5 klm back to get a burger of similar (no real restaurant s around) the couple beside me invited me over for a burger. Pretty cool. So now I am sitting at one of the unused campsites that has power and charging my phone and battery pack.
Lost my last post because I didn't sign in first. Oh well. Here goes again.
ReplyDeleteIt looks as though you are having a fantastic trip and meeting some great folk along the way. The photos are wonderful. Interesting that that bridge is coming down. I used to drive over on it all the time going to my cousin's in the Easter townships.
On to Montreal, bagels and smoked meat sandwiches. Take it easy. Long way to go and no rush.
Enjoying your trip vicariously. Actually I am a bit envious but it would take us a lot longer.
